Extraordinary NY, Inc. consist of an online store. After 20 years our retail store closed permanently on December 28, 2018.

All the items are hand picked by our owner and CEO J.R. Sanders, with a keen eye and years of museum design experience. He chooses only the finest items for their excellent design, fine craftsmanship and the quality materials used in their production. Our selection of hand carved wood vases and bowls, metal candleholders, unusual picture frames, hand painted boxes and lacquered trays, all reflect good design sensibility. We maintain a constantly changing inventory, while continuing to keep available our most classic items. Many of our products are designed and made exclusively for Extraordinary* by artisans from around the world. Although most of our items range in price from $15 to $300, nothing is included that doesn’t reflect good taste.

Our Mission

Our mission is to seek out new, unusual and difficult to find items from around the world. Before any item is selected it must pass several strict criteria to ensure that its presence will compliment the particular environment in which it is placed. Our continuing mission is to design and manufacture more and more of our own original product ideas to the exacting specifications and needs of our clientele. Our final purpose is to make sure you are pleased with every purchase you make, and we go out of our way to ensure your complete satisfaction.

"A tiny, warmly lit store in an impersonal, crowded area of midtown, Extraordinary is a welcome shopping alternative when you've just scoured a monolithic Pottery Barn. Owner J.R. Sanders worked as an exhibit designer for museums such as the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Whitney, and while this small space is a challenge for any space planner, he managed to give it a museum look. Items have been individually presented on boxlike shelves that force your eye to wander up the wall. On that wall: an assortment of trays from exotic locales, like a lacquer tray from Vietnam ($185) and a wicker tray from the Philippines ($149). Unusual gifts include napkin rings that can be filled with water and hold flowers, like tiny vases ($36 for a set of four). A set of two champagne glasses ($35 each) is another novel gift idea: The glasses feature silver-plated tops and bronze figurine stems that depict Adam and Eve, suggesting the garden of earthly delights that sometimes follows champagne. - TimeOut New York

"Lacquered crackle-egg shell trays from Vietnam, carved mango bowls from the Philippines, clever rosewood serving utensils camouflaged as tree branches from Africa, creative cheese servers and wine goblets by American glassblowers-all eye candy for those who thrive on whimsy and good design. Best of all, prices are shockingly reasonable-you’d pay twice as much at any other gallery or boutique. Truly extraordinary!" - Frommers

"The BEST GIFT SHOP EVER , IN MIDTOWN. This lovely unique shop has a gift for EVERYONE and for EVERY ROOM IN YOUR APARTMENT OR HOUSE.
EVERY GIFT I PURCHASED WAS A HIT. My attorney loved his gift for his new office. It's amazing that this shop can carry gifts for any age.
Trays, soap, fabulous glass and many other items are treasures that you would find in any exclusive gift shop in Europe.
Why go to Paris or even Italy for FABULOUS reasonably priced gifts. You don't have to wonder what to buy for family and friends when you travel. Just buy all your gifts at this great boutique store.
No attitude, no problems ever from the owners. ALWAYS HELPFUL and will always help you purchase the right gift.

"Extraordinary is my favorite gift shop anywhere, not just in New York. I live in the neighborhood and this is always my first (and often only) stop for host/hostess gifts; I've also found fabulous gifts for family, friends, coworkers, and business associates here. Items are priced reasonably and are available in many price ranges. The selection of items is well edited, so you won't waste time combing through junk; everything is great. I've only shopped in the evening, so I don't know if a different lady is there in the daytime; the lady that I've dealt with is very friendly and makes great suggestions. Complimentary gift wrap is also a super huge plus! Late hours are helpful, too. I particularly like the unusual salt & pepper sets (my mom collects them), the lovely trays (great hostess gift), the gorgeous frames, and the serving items (I purchased great salad tongs for myself, dipping cups for my mother-in-law, a candy dish for my mother-in-law, and a cheese set for my cousin). My husband likes the soap and candles.” - Denise

"My girlfriends and I went in 10 minutes before closing and we were warmly welcomed. We found two wonderful gifts at this lovely shop. Be sure to visit it if you are in the area." - Michele Kelly
